The "Institute of Consciousness Science" is located at Hangzhou Normal University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. It was founded in 2012 by Professor Di Haibo and Professor Steven Laureys.The institute mainly conducts scientific research and clinical work on patients with disorders of consciousness such as coma, unresponsive awake syndrome (vegetative state), minimally conscious state, and locked-in syndrome.The institute's overarching goals are to better understand the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness and improve the diagnosis, prognosis and clinical care of patients with severe acquired brain injury.The institute uses a series of advanced neuroimaging technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission computed tomography (PET), electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked potentials (ERP) to study the brain activity of patients with disorders of consciousness. Carry out relevant research.The institute is also working to develop new methods of assessing consciousness in non-communicating patients, exploring potential pharmacological interventions and new neuromodulation techniques to explore stimulating neuroplasticity.
